Charmey is situated at an elevation of 887 m about 8 km east of Bulle, the capital of the district Gruyère/Greyerz in the canton Fribourg. On 1 January 2014 Charmey was merged with the municipality of Cerniat to form the new municipality of Val-de-Charmey. Charmey has a populaton of about 2,000 (2013), Val-de-Charmey a total of about 2,500 (2017).
Chalmeis was first mentioned in a document dating from 1211, a document of 1294 mentions Chermeix. Later documents until 1760 use the name Feiguières. Since the first mention it was in possession of the lords of Corbières. In 1249 Charmey became the seat of a collateral line of the lords of Corbières when their domains were partitioned among three brothers. In 1454 Charmey was purchased by the Counts of Greyerz who in 1553 sold the domains of Corbières to Fribourg. Since the end of the Ancien régime in 1798 it was part of the sous-préfecture Corbières which became a district in 1803. In 1843 the district Corbières became part of the district Gruyère. On 1 January 2014 Charmey was merged with the municipality of Cerniat to form the new municipality of Val-de-Charmey.
The parish church Saint-Laurent [background centre] had already been mentioned in 1228. The present church was built in 1735–1738. The choir was added in 1937. The choir stalls date from the 17th century.
