Guggisberg

de: Guggisberg

ru: Гуггисберг uk: Гуггісберг

0000 Guggisberg Guggisberg is situated at the eastern slope of the Guggishorn (1,283 m) in Bern-Mittelland administrative district, about 22 km southwest of the canton's capital, Berne. The municipality also includes the settlements Riffenmatt, Schwendi, Kriesbaumen, Riedstätt, Kalchstätten, Hirschmatt-Laubbach, Riedacker, Sangernboden and Ottenleuebad. The main town is located at an elevation of 1,115 m, making Guggisberg one of the highest municipalities of the Swiss-Pre-Alps.

The earliest document that mentions Mons Guchani dates from 1076. The next earliest reference to the community dates from 1148, when Cucansperc was mentioned in a document of Pope Eugenius III. In 1423 the territory was divided in two and sold by Amadeus VII, Count of Savoy to Bern and Fribourg. It would remain as two separate entitites until reunified by Napoleon's Act of Mediation in 1803.

The town is known throughout Switzerland primarily for the song, Guggisberglied (Vreneli ab em Guggisberg), which was first mentioned in 1741 (wit the oldest existing text version dating from 1764). The song is about a girl named ‘Vreneli’ (Swiss German for “Verena”) from Guggisberg who longs for her beloved ‘Simes Hans-Joggeli’ (Simon's Hans-Jakob) and finds solace for her enduring love in the image of the mill wheel turning incessantly.

in 1828, the conspicuous summit rock of the Guggishorn (1,283 m) [left, no. 0000: background] was made as a tourist attraction by the construction of a wooden staircase. The Guggershorn with its viewing platform and panorama board has been a popular excursion destination ever since. The Guggershorn also became famous thanks to the Guggisberglied song. However, the name Simeliberg used in the song probably does not refer to this mountaint, but rather is probably derived from the personal name Simon.
