Trin (official name in Romansh; in German and official name until 1943: Trins) is situated at an elevation of 876 m in the Imboden region about 12 km west of Graubünden's capital, Chur. The municipality has a population of about 1,300 (2016).
Turunnio was first mentioned in the mid-12th century.
Very little is known about the history of the ruins of Canaschal castle above Trin [left, no. 3453: background]. The castle may have been built as part of the defensive complex around Trin or as a refuge castle once the fortified church on Sogn Parcazi (Romansh: St. Pancras' rock) became a feudal castle and could no longer be used as a refuge. The castle may have also been built to guard the road to the Surselva region. The ruins consist of two towers separated by about 150 meters on a hill south-east of Trin. The western tower is about three stories tall and was probably built in the 13th century. The eastern tower, built probably in the 12th century, stands on the highest point of the hill and is almost completely destroyed.
