Ostseebad Laboe is situated at the Baltic Sea coaset of Germany's state of Schleswig-Holstein at the eastern side and
end of the Kieler Förde, about 30 km northwest of the district town Plön and about
11 km northeast of Schleswig-Holstein's capital, Kiel. The municipality has a population of
about 5,600 (2023). Since 1875, the official name of the municipality is Ostseebad Laboe ('Baltic Sea Resort Laboe').
In 1226, the local area had become a possession of the monastery Preetz. The village was founded some time between that date and the year 1240, when it was first mentioned as Lubodne in 1240. Since 1875 the municipality is entitled to use the prefix Ostseebad (Baltic Sea Resort). As part of the administrative structure reform of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the previously independent municipality of Ostseebad Laboe, together with the municipalities of Schönberg (Holstein) and Stoltenberg, became part of the Amt (collective municipality) Probstei in 2008; part of the administration is located in the town.
