Kühlungsborn is the largest seasort and recreation resort of Mecklenburg. The first public baths were opened around 1880 at Arendsee and Brunshaupten. Many splendid villas and hotels were built when the road between the two villages was opened in 1904 for private development and the place soon became a highly popular seaside resort. In 1937 Arendsee, Brunshaupten, and Fulgen manor became a municipality under the name Brunshaupten-Arendsee. In 1938, the name was changed to Ostseebad Kühlungsborn which at the same time was chartered as a town. The predicate Seebad (seaside resort) was officially awarded in 1995. However, according to the town charter the predicate Ostseebad is already an inherent part of the municipality's official name. Therefore, the town's officials decided not to use the Seebad title.
