Moravskoslezský kraj | North Moravia and Silesia (Ostrava) region |
Okres: Frýdek-Místek |
Frýdek-Místek is situated on the river Ostravice which was the old border between the margraviate of Moravia and the duchy of Austrian Silesia. Frýdek on the east bank was chartered as a town in the 1st half of the 15th century. Místek on the west bank of the river was first mentioned as an episcopal town in 1267. The two towns were joined in 1943 to form the twin city of Frýdek-Místek (the German name of the twin town was Friedek-Friedberg since the name Mistek had been changed to Friedberg during the occupation of Bohemia and Moravia by Germany after 1938/39).
The pilgrimage church of the Visitation of Our Lady
(kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie)
in Frýdek was built between 1740 and 1759 replacing an older
church of the 14th century. In 1999 the church gained the status of a Basilica minor.
