Lázně Libverda

de: Bad Liebwerda
sr: Лазње Либверда

Lázně Libverda (German: Bad Liebwerda) is situated at an elevation of 424 m in the valley of the Libverdský stream, about 17 km northeast of the ditrict town and regional capital Liberec. As of 1 January 2023 the municipality has a population of 543.

4502 Lázně Libverda The earliest known written mention of the place dates from 1381 when it was mentioned as part of the Frýdlant domains. Mineral springs were discovered towards the end of the 16th century and subsequently the place became a spa location. However, the spa itself only began to emerge in the second half of the 18th century under the administration of the counts Clam-Gallas, when the first medical facilities were built here and when (in 1785) the oldest spring (Boží voda) was subjected to chemical tests.

4502 Lázně Libverda The Giant Barrel (Obří sud) [left, no. 4502] is an excursion restaurant built in 1931 just north of the village of Lázně Libverda. Its model was the Giant Barrel at the top of Javorník mountain, which is part of the nature park Ještěd. The barrel at Lázně Libverda is 11.4 metres high, 14.15 metres long and 10.5 metres wide. It is built entirely of wood and was opened at the beginning of February 1931. During the 1970s, it underwent reconstruction, during which it was completely dismantled and then reassembled. From 1974, when the Giant Barrel on Javorník burned down, until it opened after its reconstruction in 2011, the Liberda structure was the only one of its kind in the entire Czech Republic.

Glass no. 4502 is marked on the side in German: Gruss vom Risenfaß ('Greetings from the Giant Barrel').
