The Ještěd mountain (1,012 m) always has been the most popular destination for excursions by the people of Liberec.

The first shelter hut was erected in 1847. In 1876, the building was enlarged and converted to a mountain hotel [left] with a lookout. Since 1932/33 the summit can be reached by a suspension cable car. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1963, and the lookout tower was pulled down in 1965. In its place a new hotel with ten storeys and a television tower (92 m) were erected in 1972.
