Kranichberg castle is located about 4 km southeast of Gloggnitz in the
cadastral district Kranichberg of the municipality of
Craneberch was first mentioned in a written document dating from around 1150. The castle most likely was founded
at the beginning of the 13th century and belonged to the lords of Kranichberg, ministeriales of the counts of
Formbach and Pitten. After the lords of Kranichberg became extinct in 1352 the castle was owned
successively by different families. By 1420 it was in posession of the dukes of Austria and was pawned off repeatedly.
In 1480 the castle was conquered by Matthias Corvinus, but was returned following the Treaty of Pressburg (Bratislava)
1491. It was remodelled in the 16th cetury and was restored after a fire in 1745.
In 1769 the castle came into possession of the Archdiocese of Vienna and served
as a summer residence for the archbishops. Since 1970 it is privately owned
and parts of it were used as a hotel for some time. After a new change of ownership in 2018 it is planned to be the future home of the exhibits
of the former museum of dollhouses of Sankt Thomas am Blasenstein, which closed in 2018.
