Gloggnitz is situated at an elevation of 442 m in the valley of the river Schwarza in the southeast of Austria's state of Lower Austria, about 12 km southwest of the district town Neunkirchen and about 28 km southwest of the Lower Austria's capital, Wiener Neustadt. The municipality has a population of about 5,000 (2024).
Clocnica or Glocnica was first mentioned in written documents dating from 1094. Monks from the Bavarian monastery of Formbach built a monastery near the river, which led to the establishment of a provostry at this place. Until the secularisation of the monastery in 1803, the monasterial lords of the manor influenced and controlled the development of Gloggnitz. In 1556, Gloggnitz was first mentioned as a market town, but the first known document that confirms this status dates from 1622. From the middle of the 19th century, Gloggnitz experienced a boom due to industrialisation. Factories for the textile and wood processing industries were built. In 1842, the railway connection from Vienna to Gloggnitz (now part of the Southern Railway) was completed. The Semmering railroad further south to Mürzzuschlag was completed in 1854, connecting the railroad to the Southern Railroad's section from there to Graz, which had been completed in 1844. In 1926, Gloggnitz officially obtained the status of a town.
Gloggnitz 'castle' [background right] was founded as a filial monastery of the Benedictine monastery of
Vornbach (today part of Neuhaus a. Inn) after the monastery had obtained the status of an abbey in 1094.
The monastery/castle church later became the parish church of Gloggnitz until 1962 when the new parish church (church of Christ the King) was
dedicated. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 and in 1825 its manor was sold off. Since 1930 it is owned by the municipality of Gloggnitz.
Beginning in 1977, the complex of the former monastery (today popularly lnpwn as 'castle') was renovated.
