In the 1st century AD the Romans founded the military camp Ad Flexum. The castle of Moson (German: Wieselburg) was built by King Stephen I of Hungary (b.969, king 997, d.1038), while the fortress of Magyaróvár (originally called Óvár, old castle) was erected by the lords of Győr in the 13th century. The name Magyaróvár (German: Ungarisch-Altenburg) was used to distinguish the town from Deutsch-Altenburg in Austria. At the end of the 18th century the castle was owned by Duke Albrecht of Sachsen-Teschen, son-in-law of Maria-Theresia of Austria and viceroy of Hungary. Moson, Magyaróvár and the village of Lucsony were merged in 1939.
