Lunzenau is situated at an elevation of 225 m at the river Zwickauer Mulde in the district Mittelsachsen in northern Saxony. The municipality has a population of about 4,900 (2008).
The original, Sorbic, name of Lunzenau was Luncznaw. It was the southernmost Sorbic settlement in the area called Rochelinzi (Rochlitz). In 1170 German settlers founded an own settlement right next to the old Sorbic one. Five years later, Lunzenau was mentioned as a possession of the lords of Rochsburg. In 1333 Lunzenau was granted the privileges of a town. In the 20th century several neighbouring communes were incorporated into the municipality: Hohenkirchen (1967), Berthelsdorf, Cossen, Göritzhain, Rochsburg, Elsdorf (1994), and Himmelhartha (1996).

was built in 1787–1788 replacing an older church which had been destroyed in 1871 by a large fire that also had destroyed large parts of the city.
