Rochsburg castle is situated at an elevation of 260 m high on a rock
50 m above the picturesque valley of the river Zwickauer Mulde. Presumably it was founded around 1170.
The first mention in a document dates from 1195. After 1470 the stronghold was converted to a
residential castle. In 1547 the old castle was conquered by the troops of the Electorate of Saxony
during the Schmalkalden War. The lords (counts since 1700) of Schönburg acquired the castle in 1548 and rebuilt
it in 1592–1596 in late Gothic and early Renaissance style. Until 1945 the castle remained in possession
of the family. Since 1994 Rochsburg is part of the municipality of Lunzenau.
