Bad Griesbach im Schwarzwald is situated at an elevation of 467 m in the upper part of the Rench valley of the Ortenau district of southwestern Baden-Württemberg. Bad Griesbach is part of the municipality Bad Peterstal-Griesbach.
Griesbach was first mentioned in a document of 1330 (1593 Greyßbach). Since 1578 the mineral springs of Griesbach were used for bathing cures. After a large fire in 1677 the importance of the spa declined and most guests used the springs of nearby Peterstal. Griesbach (Sauerbrunnen) appears as a setting for several scenes in the novels of Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen. Prior to 1800, Griesbach was part of the sovereign territory of the archbishops of Straßburg (Strasbourg). With the secularisation after the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the area became part of the Margraviate (1806 Grand Duchy) of Baden. The municipality formed in 1809 was named Döttelbach, but was renamed Griesbach in 1863. In 1932 the predicate 'Bad' (spa) was added to the name. Since 1973, Bad Griesbach and Bad Peterstal form a common municipality, Bad Peterstal-Griesbach.
Two important historical events took place in Bad Griesbach:
On the 22nd of August 1818, Grand Duke Carl of Baden signed Baden's constitution. On the 26nd of August 1921, minister of finance and former
vice chancellor Matthias Erzberger was assassinated near Griesbach.
