Velvary

3416 Velvary 1824 Velvary Velvary is situated at an elevation of 202 m at the Červený stream in the Kladno district of northwestern Central Bohemia.

The oldest traces of humans in this area date back to the late Stone Age. No documents have survived about the early history of Velvary since the town's archives were consumed by a fire in 1482. The privileges of a town, however, were confirmed that same year by the Bohemian King Vladislav (Ladislaus) II Jagellon. Almost nothing has remained of the Gothic town since it was damaged by many forther fires throughout the later centuries. Most of the historic buildings in town date from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The modern development of Velvary began with the connection in 1882 to the railroad from Prague to Dresden.

The deanery church of St. Catherine [left, no. 3416: left] was built in the 14th century as a one-naved Gothic church. It was modified in 1478, 1580, and in the Baroque period in the late 17th century.

The Town hall [left, no. 3416: right] was built in 1721–1724 and modified in 1795.

The Baroque Plague or Lady Column [right, no. 1824: right] was created in 1716–1719.

The pub Panská hospoda ('Lord's Inn') [left, no. 3416: top right inset] is closely connected with the origin of the Renaissance mocking folk song “O Velvary, o Velvary, kde jsou mé tolary?” ('Oh Velvary, oh Velvary, where are my thalers?'), the first two lines of which are written on the label of glass no. 3416 [left]. The building itself dates from the Baroque period (1696–1698) and replaced the former inn that had been destroyed by a fire.

Velvary is the birth place of the composers Johann Anton (Jan Antonín) Kotzeluch (Koželuch, Kozeluch, Koschelich) (1738–1814) and his cousin Leopold (Johann Anton) Kotzeluch (1747–1818).
