Sohland a. d. Spree is situated at an elevation of 302 m at the upper Spree river in the Bautzen district in the Upper Lausitz region of eastern Saxony.
A wooden bridge across the river, which had been built in 1709, was replaced by a stone bridge in 1796.
Since 1876 the bridge, now Sohland's landmark, is shown on the municipality's seal and coat of arms.
The bed of the river Spree was moved away in 1947. Since then, the bridge only spans the village stream.
Many of the old houses in Sohland were built in a characteristic combination of blockhouse and half-timbered house construction.
