Karlštejn castle is situated on a rock above the river Berounka. It was built by Emperor Karl IV between 1348 and 1357 for the purpose of guarding the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire and of the Kingdom of Bohemia. The jewels were kept here until 1425. The Hussites tried to conquer the castle in 1422 and besieged it for seven months. The siege by the Swedes in 1648 caused severe damage. A renovation in Neo-Gothic style was carried out 1887–1899 after plans of the architect Friedrich von Schmidt. Karlštejn is considered to be the most beautiful castle in Bohemia.
