867 Neuwied Neuwied is situated at an elevation of 65 m on the right bank of the Rhine river near the mouth of the Wied stream. Neuwied was founded in 1653 by Count Friedrich III zu Wied (1631–1698) as his new residence (Newen Wiedt). Most other parts of the town date back to Medieval or even Roman times. Neuwied was an 'open town' without fortifications and no restrictions for settlers. The liberal town charter dates from 1662. During the wars (1795–1797) following the French Revolution, Neuwied was the site of several battles between the troops of France, Prussia and Austria. The 'Battle at Neuwied' (18 April 1797) secured Napoleon's position in Paris.

The castle Neuwied [top] was built in 1702–1712 in Classicistic style in place of the old castle that had been created in 1646–1648 but had been destroyed by French troops in 1694.
