The market town of Kautzen is situated at an elevation of 525 m in the northern Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, in the district Waidhofen an der Thaya, close to the border to the Czech Republic.
The first written mention of Chawcen dates from 1112 and is found in an inventory of the monastery of
Herzogenburg. As the main village of the domain Illmau, Kautzen grew to become a market town. The oldest document
mentioning Kautzen as such dates from 1520.
