815 Šibenik Šibenik is situated on the Adriatic coast at the mouth of the river Krka. The steep and high ridge above the town had been settled a long time before the first Croats arrived in the area. The name Šibenik was first mentioned in a document of 1066. In 1298, the place had obtained the status of a town. Due to its favourable position, Šibenik always played an important military and strategic role. However, the town fell under Venetian rule in 1412 after the town had been under siege for three years. From the end of the 15th century onward, the Turks often threatened Šibenik, but they never could conquer the town. The fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797 brought Šibenik under Austrian rule, and the town remained so until the fall of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1918.

The citadel of St. Anne (Tvrđava Sveta Ana) [top left] was built in the 12th and 13th century and still dominates the ancient town.

The cathedral of St. James was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. (see also list of other UNESCO heritage sites depicted on glasses of this collection)
