Hořice na Šumavì
• de: Höritz, Höritz im Böhmerwald, Markt Höritz
• ru: Горжице-на-Шумаве
Hořice na Šumavì (Höritz) was first mentioned in 1274. In 1290 it was sold to the monastery of Vyšší Brod (Hohenfurt). Already
in 1375 it was the most important village of the area. It obtained the rights of a market town in 1549.
The fame of the town was founded by the Passion plays which originated in 1816 and were performed until 1948.
The wooden Passion theatre was built 1892–1893. After an extension in the following year the
theatre had an unbelievable capacity of 2000 seats! Until 1936 all performances were in German language. During Worls War II
the plays were prohibited by the Nazis. After 1945 the tradition was renewed using a translation into Czech language. Although (or, perhaps, because)
these plays still were extremely popular, they were prohibited by the Communist Party in 1948. The theatre building was used
as a sheepfold and hay storage, and in 1966 it was demolished altogether with a pilgrimage church standing nearby. However,
recently the tradition was renewed again and the first Passion play using a new text was performed in 1993, this time in an open-air theatre.
Another glass in this collection is from Hořice (Hořice v Podkrkonoší) in eastern Bohemia.
