Bad Schmiedeberg in the region Dübener Heide was first mentioned in a document of 1206 (as Smedeberg). Already in 1350 it obtained the status of a town. The reformer Martin Luther came into Schmiedeberg in 1528 and preached in the town church. Not much has survived from the old medieval town as it was largely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War by Swedish troops. The town gate 'Au-Tor' is one of the few buildings which have survived from that period.
The tradition as a mud-bath spa began in 1878.
The Kurhaus
[left] was built in 1908 in Art Nouveau style and is still the centre of the spa life.
