Schönheide in the mountain region Erzgebirge looks back on a history of more than 450 years.
The first settler arrived here in 1537. The first mention in a document dates from 1542. The village of Schönheide was
founded in 1549. In 1669 the village obtained the right to found trade guilds.
In 1875 the railway line from Chemnitz was opened. This line had to be closed after the construction of
the storage dam at Eibenstock as the tracks were flooded.
The narrow gauge railway line from Wilkau via Schönheide to Carlsfeld,
the oldest and longest narrow gauge railway line of Saxony, was constructed 1881–1897. The regular traffic
on this line was stopped in 1977 but a small part of the line was re-opened as a museum line in 1991.
