Hrádek nad Nisou (German: Grottau) is situated at an elevation of 255 m on the right bank of the river Nysa (Neiße), at the tripoint of the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland and about 18 km northwest of the regional capital Liberec and about 91 km northeast of Prague. The municipality has a population of about 7,900 (2023).
The earliest written document mentioning the place dates from 1287. During the Hussite Wars, in 1424, the town was burned down.
The place developed economically especially in the 16th century. Until the mid-19th century, it was a small town subject to the
manorial authority of Grafenstein (Grabštejn). In the 19th century, the area became industrialised. The railway was built in 1859.
Engineering, chemical and textile factories were established. From the 19th century until 1972, lignite was mined in the vicinity of the
town. Up until the period of the Austro-Hugarian monarchy the town had a German-speaking majority. After World War I it became part of
Czechoslovakia and a Czech school was established in 1925. From 1938 to 1945 it was annexed by Nazi Germany and administered as part of the
Reichsgau Sudetenland (see map). The German-speaking population was expelled after World War II. From 1972,
the railway connection to Zittau — which had been interrupted in 1945 — was restored; furthermore, in
1991, a border crossing for pedestrians and cyclists was opened, leading to the neighboring German town of Hartau, near Zittau.
The
Neisse bridge [left, no. 5083], a steel construction, was constructed in 1907 in place of a
wooden bridge dating from 1860. This bridge in turn was replaced by a new bridge that was built in 1967–1970 some 70 metres downstream.
