Nevesinje is situated at an elevation of 883 m on a plateau in the rural mountainous area of eastern Herzegovina, some 30 km east of Mostar.
The Serbian insurgency against the Ottoman rule began in 1875 here in Nevesinje. The struggle was joined by Serbia and Montenegro in 1876, and in 1877 Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire. The Treaty of Berlin authorized Austria-Hungary in 1878 to occupy Bosnia-Herzegovina. The annexation of 1908 placed Bosnia-Herzegovina under joint administration of Austria and Hungary.
Nevesinje was heavily affected by the ethnic clashes of 1992/93. Before the war about 23% of the population had been Muslim Bosniaks.
Of these less than 1% have remained. All mosques of the area, some of them dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, have been destroyed,
about 60% of all private housings were damaged. Today the municipality of Nevesinje belongs to the Trebinje region of the Republika Srpska
part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
