Gaildorf is situated at an elevation of 329 m on the river Kocher in the northeast of Germany's state Baden-WÜrttemberg, about 13 ,km south of the district town Schwäbisch Hall and about 50 km northeast of Stuttgart. The municipality has a population of about 12,400 (2023).

The first written mention of Gaildorf is dated to 1255, based on a 16th-century copy. the counts Schenk of Limpurg, first mentioned in Gaildorf in 1374, were granted important privileges over time: in 1403, they received jurisdiction over capital offences as an imperial fiefdom, a year later they received town and market rights for Gaildorf, and another year later they received the right to surround the town with a wall. In 1441 Gaildorf became the residence of the line Limpurg-Gaildorf (partitioned between 1552 and 1682 into Gaildorf-Gaildorf and Gaildorf-Schmiedelfeld). The Reformation was introduced into Gaildorf in 1540. The Duchy of Württemberg (1803 Electorate, 1806 Kingdom) annexed the Limpurg lands in 1803/1805, upon which the town became the administrative centre of a district (Oberamt). After the foundation of the German Empire in 1871, Gaildorf remained a mostly rural community, even after its connection in 1879 to the railroad system. In 1945, Gaildorf fell into the American occupation zone and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden. With the founding of Baden-Württemberg in 1952, the town became part of the current federal state. Gaildorf was incorporated into the district of Schwäbisch Hall in the course of the district reform in 1973, and the district of Backnang was dissolved. Between 1971 and 1974, the previously independent municipalities of Eutendorf, Unterrot and Ottendorf were incorporated into Gaildorf as part of regional reforms.

The Protestant town church [background centre] dates back to the 15th century. The choir was built in 1435, the keystone of the choir vault is dated 1521. The church was largely destroyed by the large fire of 1868 that destroyed large parts of the town. Rebuilt after that, the church suffered severe damages again in 1945, so that only the old choir remained of the old church.
