Breitenau is situated at an elevation of 343 m in the Steinfeld region of southern Lower Austria, 5 km east of the neighbouring district town Neunkirchen and about 64 km southeast of Lower Austria's capital, Sankt Pölten. The municipality has a population of about 1,600 (2025).

The earliest known document referring to Breitenau dates from 1073. In 1822 it was mentioned as a village as part of the parish of Schwarzau am Steinfeld.
