Kalinino (Russian: Калинино, in German until 1938 Mehlkehmen, 1938–1945 Birkenmühle)
is situated at an elevation of 150 m in the north of the Romincka Forest (Rominter Heide) on the left bank of the river Pissa, about
20 km south of the administrative centre of the district, Nesterov, and about 134 southeast of Kaliningrad
(Калининград). The municipality has a population of about 390 (2021).
Mehlkehmen belonged to the Goldap district from 1818 to 1841, and then to the Stallupönen district (Ebenrode district from 1938 to 1945) in the Gumbinnen (Gusev (Гусев)) administrative region of the Prussian province of East Prussia until 1945. In 1874, the municipality of Mehlkehmen was formed from the rural communities of Klein Lengmeschken, Mehlkehmen, Messeden, and Sobeitschen, which had previously been part of the same administrative district. The three municipalities were incorporated into the municipality of Mehlkehmen in 1937, so that the Mehlkehmen district then consisted only of the municipality of Mehlkehmen. Since 1947, the place has been called Kalinino, a very common place name in Russia. At the same time, Kalinino became the seat of a village soviet in the Nesterov district. From 2008 to 2018, Kalinino belonged to the rural settlement of Tschistyje Prudy (Чистые Пруды) settlement and since then to the Nesterov urban district.
The views depicted on glass no. 4907 [left] are labelled in German and are show:
Dorfstraße (Village Road);
Schule u[nd] Birkenallee (Birch Avenue);
Kirche (church): The church, built in 1603 and renovated between 1699 and 1706, is now in an advanced state of disrepair.
It survived the Second World War unscathed. During the Soviet era, it was used as a warehouse for agricultural equipment. The windows were bricked up and
the roof was covered with asbestos cement tiles. A water pressure tank was installed in the tower. In 1996, the building was transferred to the Russian
Orthodox Church. Their plan to restore the church has not yet been realised.
