Chlumec nad Cidlinou

Chlumec nad Cidlinou is situated at an elevation of 223 m at the confluence of the river Bystřice into the river Cidlina, about 27 km southwest of the district town and regional capital, Hradec Kráové. the municipality has a population of about 5,600 (2023).

The earliest known written document that mentions Chlumec dates from 1235, the village of Lučice, today part of Chlumec nad Cidlinou, was already mentioned in 1110. The Sternberg (Šternberk) family owned Chlumec until 1393. During the first half of the 15th century, it belonged to the lords of Bergov, who had built a water castle here. After that it belonged to the various nobles and changed owners several times, and in 1521 it was acquired by the Pernštejn family. During their rule, the estate grew significantly and prospered. In 1547, the Chlumec estate was bought by the royal chamber. From 1611, Chlumec belonged to the Kinsky family. During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), the town was conquered and looted repeatedly. It was badly damaged and the castle was destroyed. In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the town recovered and crafts flourished. The town developed rapidly before World War I.

The deanery church of St. Ursula [bottom picture] was started in 1536/1538 in late Gothic style and was completed in 1543 in Renaissance style. It has three naves with a prismatic tower and an onion dome with a triangular presbytery. The interior decorations in Rococo style were created after a fire in 1774.

Karlova Koruna (Karlskron) château [top left] was built in Barqoe style in 1721–1723. Construction was completed in time for Emperor Karl VI's formal coronation as King of Bohemia in 1723. Count Kinsky invited the emperor to the château and named the castle after the king (Karlova Koruna in Czech or Karlskron in German means 'Charles' crown' in English). The family was dispossessed in 1948 by the Czechoslovak state. It château was restituted to the family after 1990.

The municipal and city schools [top right] was built in 1898–1899 in order to concentrate all schools that existed at the time in Chlumec in one building.



The German name of Chlumec nad Cidlinou was Chlumetz an der Cidlina, the suffix distinguishing it from Chlumetz, i.e. Chlum u Třeboně in South Bohemia.
