Wildenthal is situated at an elevation of 878 m in the valley of the river Große Bockau in the nature reserve Erzgebirge/Vogtland, about 6 km southeast of Eibenstock, about 31 km southwest of the district town Annaberg-Buchholz, about 47 km southwest of Chemnitz and about 103 km southwest of Saxony's capital, Dresden. As of 2011, the village had a populatoin of 654. Since 1994 it is part of the municipality of Eibenstock.
1598 is considered to be the date of foundation of Wildenthal, when Anarg Friedrich von Wildenfels, the Electorate of Saxony's
chief captain in Plauen and the entire Vogtland district, founded a hammer mill at his place.
A special postal route from Zwickau over the Hirschenstander Pass towards Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary)
was established in 1819 and was upgraded to a summer express line in 1837. The first summer tourists stayed to visit Wildenthal in 1860.
In 1886 it wasmentioned as 'one of the highest mountain spa places. In 1965, the town was one of the first in the Western Ore Mountains
to receive the title of "Staatlich anerkannter Erholungsort" ('State-recognized health resort'). On 1 January 1994, Wildenthal was
merged into the municipality of Eibenstock.
