Aichach is situated at an elevation of 446 m about 20 northeast of Augsburg
and about 49 km northwest of Munich. Aichach is the capital of the district Aichach-Friedberg.
The municipality has a population of about 21,900 (2023).
Aichach can look back on a history spanning almost a thousand years. The settlement is certainly older than its church, which was first mentioned in in the second half of the 11th century (before 1078). In 1250, a commander was first mentioned as the head of a house of the Teutonic Order in Aichach. Aichach was the seat of a Teutonic Order commandery until 1384, which later moved to Blumenthal and existed until 1806. In 1347 Aichach received the privileges of a town. During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), Aichach was repeatedly damaged by the warring parties as the town was located on the road from Augsburg to Regensburg. Before 1800, the town was a bailiwick and belonged to the Munich Rentamt of the Electorate of Bavaria. The Aichach District Office, the forerunner of the Aichach District , had existed since 1862. During the 1972 district reform , it formed the provisional "Augsburg-East District" with the Friedberg District and individual communities from other districts. The district received its final name, Aichach-Friedberg district, in 1973.
The parish church Mariä Himmelfahrt (Assumption of Our Lady) was first mentioned in
1153. In 1210 it was donated to the Teutonic Order. The church received its present form around 1450. From 1771 onwards
it was remodeled in Baroque style. During a restoration in 1861–1861, previous Gothic style elements were again
re-established. In 1906–1908 the interior was again remodeled in Historistic style. The Art-Nouveau colorings were
covered up in 1955/1956. Further renovations followed in 1978 until the mid-1980s. The roof, the exterior and the bell tower
were renovated in 2011–2017.
