Sant Hilari Sacalm is situated at an elevation of 803 m in the south of the Guillieres mountains of eastern Catalonia, about
28 km southwest of the provincial capital Girona and about 62 km northeast of Catalonias capital,
Barcelona. The municipality has a population of about 5,800 (2022). Due to the numerous streams that originate
within the area of the densely wooded and mountainous municipality, the place is also called La vila de les cent fonts in Catalan
or La villa de las cien fuentes in Spanish ('The village of a hundred springs’).
Historically, the place developed especially as it was located at the crossroads of important trading routes such as the one from Girona to Vic. In 1937, in the midst of the Spanish Civil War, the name was changed to Fonts de Sacalm. The marketing of natural mineral water from local springs plays a central role in the local economy. The 'Font Vella' brand mineral water, which has been commercially marketed since 1892 is one of the best known Spanish mineral waters. The 'Font d’Or' mineral water, which has been awarded gold medals by six various organizations, also comes from Sant Hilari Sacalm.
Every year on Good Friday, a passion play takes place in Sant Hilari Sacalm that is known far beyond the borders of Catalonia.
The Easter performances go back to a tradition that is more than 250 years old. The Passion Play 'Via Crucis Vivent' in Sant Hilari
Sacalm was declared a 'Festa patrimonial d'interès nacional' by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2010.
