Trollhättan is situated at an elevation of 57 m on the river Göta älv, which drains Lake Vänern into the Kattegat, about 66 km northeast of Göteborg. The municipality has a population of about 48,600 (2015).
Utilization of the river falls was the first important business activity in the area. The site was first mentioned in literature from 1413. From the Middle Ages milling and sawing operations have been conducted where the city center is now located. For centuries, Trollhättan Falls was an obstacle for boats travelling the river, until a lock system was completed in the 19th century. Trollhättan was granted city rights (which today have no egal effect) in 1916.
Construction of the Trollhätte Canal [left, no. 4600] began in 1718 in order to connect the
Kattegat via Lake Vänern to the Baltic Sea. The locks were completed in 1800. Larger locks were were later built in the late 19th century.
The further construction of the Göta Canal enabled larger boats to pass through Trollhätte Canal.
