Isny im Allgäu is situated at an elevation of 704 m in the Allgäu region of southeastern Baden-Württemberg at the border to Bavaria. The municipality has a population of about 14,800 (2022).
In the late Roman era, a fort, named Vemania, was founded in this area between about 276 and 283 AD. Modern Isny was founded around 1043. The earliest
known written mention dates from 1096 when the local church was handed over to the monks of the Hirsau monastery. By the end of the 12th century the village
had obtained the status of a market town. The privileges as a town were granted in 1281. After three centuries of domination by feudal lords and territorial rulers,
Isny's citizens were able to purchase the town's independence in 1365, and Isny then enjoyed the status of an Imperial free town. In 1376 Isny joined the Swabian
League of Cities (founded in 1331 by the cities of Augsburg, Heilbronn, Reutlingen and
Ulm). In 1529, Isny's Protestant minority took the city council and voted to make the town Protestant. In 1803, the city was mediatized
and became a possession of the counts of Quadt. In 1806, the city passed to the Kingdom of Württemberg, which allowed the Catholic majority to once again move
to the city. In 1972 the former independent municipalities of Beuren, Großholzleute, Neutrauchburg and Rohrdorf were merged into the municipality. When the
district Wangen was dissolved in 1973, Isny became part of the district Ravensburg.
