Okres: Kutná Hora |
Kácov is situated at an elevation of 332 m at the river Sázava about 26 km southwest
of the district town Kutná Hora and about 54 km southeast of Czechia's capital,
Prague. As of 2023, the municipality had a population of 796.
The first written mention of Kácov dates from 1318. In 1412 it was granted the status of a market town. Until 1849 it belonged to the district district Čáslav. In 1850 it was reassigned to the district Kolín but was returned to the district Čáslavin 1855. Since 1868 it is part of the district Kutná Hora.
Kácov castle was built after 1635, when it had come in possession of the Lobkovic family, in place of the Renaissance fortress
that had been built in its place in the 16th century (this in turn had replaced the medieval fortress of the 15th century).
In 1726–1732 the castle was rebuilt in the style of a Baroque northern Italian residence, but significant parts of the previous
Gothic and Renaissance structures were preserved. Since 1918 it was owned by the Czechoslovak state and housed the administration of
state forests. In 2003, the upper part of the castle was dmaged by fire. In 2008 it came in possession of the municipality of Kácov.
In 2017 it was purchased by a new, private owner. Since 2018, an extensive reconstruction of the castle has been underway.
