4397 Monnetier-Mornex Monnetier-Mornex is situated at an elevation of 543 m (406–1268 m) about 8 km southeast of the Swiss city of Geneva on the eastern slopes of Mont Salè (Grand Malève and Petit Salève). The municipality includes the localities Bas-Mornex, Baugé, Esserts-Salève, Monnetier, Mornex and Naz. It has a population of about 2,300 (2020).

Various archeoloögical finds indicate that the area was inhabited as early as the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman times. Even the Celts mined iron at the foot of the Salève. From the 10th century the area was under the control of the Bishops of Geneva, later the Counts of Geneva. Monnetier and Mornex (Mornacum or Mornay in the Middle Ages) were mentioned in the 12th century. There was a castle in both Mornex and Monnetier. In 1659 the towns passed to Savoy and shared its fate from that time on. Towards the end of the 19th century, Monnetier developed into a health resort with various hotels. In 1974, Esserts-Salève was incorporated into Monnetier-Mornex. Between 1893 and 1937, the town was served by the world's first electric rack railway, the Chemin de fer du Salève.

The Château de l'Ermitage [left], labeled on glass no. 4397 as Château de Monnetier, situated high on the side of a cliff, dominates the plain of the Genevois. Initially built as a fortress, it was described in the 16th century as "a château also called its hermitage". In 1589 it was captured, burned and demolished by tropps from Geneva. Left in ruins for three centuries, it was used by the villagers of Monnetier as a quarry. On the site of the ruins and the old keep a mansion was built starting in 1855, which was used as a hotel-pension, remaining in the same family until the 1990s. After beeing bought, it was recently luxuriously renovated.
