Crikvenica is one of the most important centres of tourism at the Dalmatian coast. Due to the mild climate, even in winter, the climatic resort is visited by numerous tourists throughout the year.
Already in Roman times this was the place of the military post Ad Turres. The name Crikvenica is derived from the church (croatian: crkva) that was built in the 14th century at the mouth of the rivulet Dubraèina. Crikvenica remained a small village until 1873 when a branch line of the railroad Vienna–Trieste to Rijeka (Fiume) was opened. Four years later the harbour was built, followed by the first public baths in 1888. Already in 1892 the first travel guide, "Curort und Seebad Crikvenica", describing only this little town was published.
