Železný Brod was founded in the 11th century. Originally it was called Brod or Brodek ('ford' or 'small ford'); it was not until the 14th century that the name Železný ('iron') was added, which should refer to the local ironworks. The first written mention of Brod dates from 1352. In 1501 the city obtained the privileges of a town. In 1920 a vocational glassmaking school was founded and due to this, Železný Brod became a centre of glass industry and art.
The Neo-Renaissance town hall [left, no.ག3906: top picture] was built in 1890 according to the design of the architect Jan Zeyer. In 1909 a side wing in Art Nouveau style was added. The town hall also houses the municipal theater.
The High School of Glass Arts [near left, no. 4566] was founded in 1920.
