Feldberg is situated at an elevation of 108 m in the nature reserve Feldberger Seenlandschaft ('Feldberg Lake District') in the southeast of Germany's state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern close to the border to Brandenburg. Feldberg is part of the municipality Feldberger Seenlandschaft, created in 1999 out of the former independent communities of Feldberg, Conow, Dolgen, Lichtenberg and Lüttenhagen. Feldberg is the seat of the municipality, which has a total population of about 4,400 (2018).
The oldest traces of human settlements in this area date back to the Bronze Age (about 1800 to 600 BC). The oldest written document mentioning a stronghold Veltberg dates from 1256. 1In 1519 Feldberg became the seat of a domain office of the duchy of Mecklenburg. When Mecklenburg was partitioned in 1701 (Treaty of Hamburg), Feldberg became part of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, which after the end of the monarchy became the Free State of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, which in 1934 was reunited with Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In 1919 Feldberg obtained the status of a town, at the time being of of the smallest towns in Mecklenburg. After World War II Feldberg grew rapidly due to the influx of Germans that had been expelled from the former eastern territories of Germany. In 1972 it obtained the official status of a state-recognised resort town. In 1999 it was merged with the neighbouring communities of Conow, Dolgen, Lichtenberg and Lüttenhagen and since then is the seat of the municipality Feldberger Seenlandschaft.
