Malente is situated at an elevation of 32 m in the cetre of the 'Holsteinische Schweiz' ('Holstein Switzerland') region, between the lakes Dieksee and Kellersee, about 5 km northwest of Eutin and 10 km east of Plön. The municipality has a population of about 10,800 (2018).
The oldest settlement was probably founded around 1150. The church of St. Maria Magdalena was built after 1227. Malente gained importance when a sanatorium was built in 1905. In 1934 the municipalities of Malente and Neukirchen were merged, in 1935 Malente was officially recognised as a Kneipp spa.
The former Hotel Bruhnskoppel [left, no. 3784] is located on a
hill (Malkwitzer Höhe, 74 m) north of the lake Krummsee. A hotel with restaurant were built in 1870
and already included the lookout tower (21 m high). The hotel was rebuilt in 1902. The hotel was closed in 2010, the
interior furnishings and parts of the building were auctioned. Plans were made in 2012 to completely remove the building
and replace it with a new construction.
