Okres: Jindřichův Hradec |
Dačice is situated at an elevation of 577 m on the river Vápovka in the east of the district Jindřichův Hradec of the Czech region of South Bohemia (historically, however, Dačice is part of Moravia). The municipality has a population of about 7,300 (2019).
The oldest written mention, in a chronicle of the monastery of Milevsko, dates from 1183. In the middle of the 14th century, the place belonged to the lords of Hradec (Jindřichův Hradec). In the course of the 15th century it obtained the status of a town. During the 16th century it was largely freodeled in Renaissance style also was an important centre of the Unity of the Brethren. The Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) was a disaster for the city, in 1680 Dačice depopulated again by the plague, and then in 1690 a huge fire again hit the town. Large parts of the town were then rebuilt in Baroque style. At the beginning of the 19th century Dačice became the centre of vocational education and industry. The first beet sugar mill of modern times was founded here in 1829. In 1841, Jakob Christoph Rad produced the first cube sugar in the world, patented in the same year. During the Austrian monarchy, Datschitz was the administrative centre of a district with 180 municipalities. With the exception of the war years 1940–1945, Dačice remained the seat of the district office until 1960, when after more than a hundred years not only the district's seat, but also found itself with other Moravian towns and villages in the newly cretaed region of South Bohemia.
The church of St. Lawrence [background centre] was already mentioned
in 1183 when a Romanesque church was consecrated. This was rebuilt in the 15th century in Gothic style. The massive
Renaissance tower was added in 1562–1592. The Gothic church was demolished in the 18th century and was
replaced by the present, late Baroque church, built in 1775–1788.
