Böttingen is situated at an elevation of 911 m on an elevated plain of the Großer Heuberg about km north of the district town Tuttlingen in southern Baden-Württemberg. The municipality has a population of about 1,400 (2017).
Böttingen was first mentioned in 802 AD in a deed of donation for the monastery of Sankt Gallen. From 1253 it belonged to the monastery Beuron. Following several changes in ownership, the village in 1805 became part of Württemberg. Since 1938 it is part of the district Tuttlingen.
