Oberegg

ru: Оберэгг

3452 Oberegg Oberegg is a district of the Swiss cacnton Appenzell Innerrhoden and comprises two parts, both exclaves of the canton, a few kilometres northeast of the rest of Appenzell Innerrhoden. In addition, the monastery St. Ottilia Grimmenstein, located in Walzenhausen (Appenzell Ausserrhoden) also belongs to the district. The district has a population of about 1,900 (2016).

While Oberegg was first mentioned in 1470 as a village, Hirsberg (Hirschberg) was already mentioned in the 11th century. In 1597 Hirschberg itself was divided in the wake of the Reformation; In 1597 with the 'Landteilungsbrief' (Land division treaty), the Catholic majority stayed with the Catholic part of Appppenzell (Innerrhoden), the Protestant minority of Hirschberg joined Protestant Ausserrhoden and became part of the community of Reute. The affiliation of the Catholic nunnery Grimmenstein in Walzenhausen for long was disputed between Ausserrhoden and Innnerrhoden. Only in 1870 it was decided by the Swiss Confereaftion that the monastery buildings including the church of St. Ottilia would belong to Innerrhoden, while further buildings and land would be part of Ausserrhoden. The 'half rhodes' Oberegg and Hirschberg were merged into the district of Oberegg in 1872.

The mountain pass Sankt Anton (elevation 1,100 m), about 3 km southwest of Oberegg, connects Oberegg with Ruppen pass (canton St. Gallen).
