Světlá nad Sázavou is situated at an elevation of 515 m on the right bank of the river Sázava in the district Havlíčkův Brod. The municipality has a population of about 6,600 (2017).
The place was first mentioned 1207 as a possession of the monastery of Vilémov. Its church obtained the status of
a parish church in 1343. When the monastery of Vilémov was destroyed during the Hussite Wars, Svétlá
became a property of the Bohemian Crown in 1421. From 1429 until 1635 the domains were owned by the lords Trčka of
Lípa. Thereafter, the domains were sold off to several noble failies. In 1748 the Krakowsky of Kolowrat purchased
the domains. After the abolition of manorialism in 1850, Světlá became an independent municipality. In
1855 it obtained the status of a town.
