Javorník was founded in the 12th/13th century by the bishops of Breslau (today Wrocław in Poland)
on an important trading route from Moravia to Silesia. Already at that time
a castle existed. The village obtained the status of a town in 1549.
The castle Jánský Vrch (Johannesberg) was built
above the town between 1505 and 1509 by Bishop Johannes Thurzo on the spot of the old castle which had
existed until the 15th century. Since then then castle served as summer residence
of the bishops of Breslau (Wrocław). During the 18th century the interior of the castle was renovated
in Baroque style.
Between 1769 and 1794 the composer Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739–1799) was conductor and director of the castle theatre. A frequent guest in the castle was the German poet Joseph von Eichendorff (1788–1857).
The Marian Column in JavornÃk's central square [near left, no. 4847: foreground]
was created in 1723.
