Výšina Františka Josefa (German: Josefshöhe) is a muntain saddle (elevation 600 m) on the Czech–German border, north of Krompach (Krombach) in the Liberec region of northern Bohemia and southwest of Oybin in the Görlitz district of eastern Saxony. The village on the Czech side, Valy (formerly Schanzendorf), is part of the municipality of Krompach, the village on the German side, Hain, is part of the municipality of Oybin.
During the Thrty Years' War (1618–1648), entrenchments (in German: 'Schanzen') were built here in order to defend the region against the Swedish troops. The village began to develop here at the beginning of the 18th century, hence became known as Schanzendorf. The rigins of Hain date back to 1561/1566 when the first settlement was founded. After the end of manorialism in the late 19th century, Schanzendorf became a municipality within the district Bunzlau (Jung-Bunzlau, today Mladá Boleslav). Schanzendorf became part of Krombach in 1852; Hain today is part of Oybin.
The mountain inn Grenzbaude [left], also known as
Restaurant Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, was built around the turn of the century. The picture shows its
condition after the right part of the veranda was closed between 1908 and 1910.
The building is located on the Czech side (Krompach no. 182), the border runs along
the outside of the closed veranda on the right. The wooden verandas do not exist any more today, the building itself
does not operate anymore.
