Vyšné Ružbachy is situated at an elevation of 615 m in the foothills of the
Spišská Magura mountains of northeastern Slovakia in the district Stará
Ľubovňa. The municipality has a population of about 1,400 (2015).
Nova Rusunbach was first mentioned in 1329. Its tradition as a spa place goes back to the 16th century
when a first bath house was built in 1595. However, the modern development into a spa place only began in the
19th century. The spa was confiscated and nationalised after World War II. Most of the spa buildings
still date from between 1920 and 1940. The spa pool 'Kráter', filled with thermal water (24°C), has been
listed as a national monument in 1967.
