La Haye-Pesnel is situated at an elevation of 96 m in the département Manche, arrondissement Avranches, about 42 km southwest of Saint-Lô. La Haye-Pesnel is chef-lieu of the canton of the same name; the municipality has a population of about 1,400 (2013).
The name La Haye-Pesnel goes back to Haia Paganelli in the 12th century, where 'haye' is of Germanic origin, refering to a place cleared of wood, while 'Pesnel' refers to the old owners of the domains, the Paisnel or Paynel. During the period of the Convention nationale (1792–1795), the name was changed to La Haye-Libre.
