Azuga is situated at an elevation of 900 m in the upper valley of the river Prahova between the Bucegi mountains to the west and the Baiu mountains in the east. The municipality has a population of about 5,000 (2007).
Until around 1800 the area was used mainly by herdsmen. The first houses were built around 1800.
From around 1830 Azuga began to develop as an industrial town.
Azuga obtained the status of a town in 1948.
