Sehlde is situated at an elevation of 120 m in the valley of the river Innerste, about 10 soutwest of Salzgitter in the district Wolfenbüttel. Sehlde is part of the collective municipality Baddeckenstedt. The community of Sehlde has a population of about 1000 (2007).
The earliest written mention of the place is found in a document dating to 1130.
